2004–2005 Season

The programme includes a summary of each internal competition’s rules. But please refer to the Handbook for details where information is more comprehensive and takes precedence.

September 9: ‘Welcome Evening’.

Open to all. Come along, meet our members and hear some of them present a selection of their work. Light refreshments will be provided.

September 16: ‘Just Kids’. Anna Wiskin.

Anna may be well known to you for her beautiful fund-raising calendar for Hinchingbrooke baby-care unit. She also specialises in wedding photography.

September 23: Annual Slide Competition. Judge: David Leathers.

Maximum four slides. Less than two years old. Colour or monochrome. None entered in this competition before.

September 30: ‘A Year of Nature Photography’. Les Borg.

Les is a professional nature photographer, supplying books, magazines and advertising.

October 7: ‘Road Show Away’. Bill Law.

Bill will lead a lively discussion on the comparative merits of well-known photographic images. Come along and state your views and possibly defend them against those of other members.

October 14: Melbourne Trophy.

This year we host the first round slide tournament against Hitchin.

October 21: Set Subject Competition. ‘Circles’. Judge: Dave Nelson.

Prints (no en-prints) and slides. Maximum three images. No age limit, none entered in this competition before.

October 28: Practical Evening.

Bring your camera and prints along for helpful advice from our more experienced club members.

November 4: ‘New Orleans and All That Jazz’.

Howard Denner. Howard took early retirement to turn professional and devote himself to photographing musical events.

November 11: En-Print Competition. Judge: Anna Meek.

Bring up to six en-prints for discussion, then choose – if you want to – one or two for entry into the competition.

November 18: ‘Not too much flash” John Dyer.

. . . but, maybe, sufficient bang and wallop

November 25: ‘The MG Collection’. Richard Monk.

Richard, the Managing Director of MG Owners Club in Swavesey, has published two books covering MG over the last 70 years, on which his talk will be based.

December 2: ‘Magic Moment’, Irene Froy.

The welcome return of this well-known photographer. Her talk will illustrate “those exciting times when a picture and good lighting come together”.

December 9: Monochrome Trophy. Judge: David Steele.

Less than two years old. No more than two of the entries already been entered in an internal competition except Set Subject

December 16: ‘Samuel Butler – Victorian Photographer’. Dudley Simons.

A privileged viewing of some fine old photographs arranged by Dudley.

January 6: ‘Seasonal Variations in Yellowstone Park’. Jim MacAndrew and Malcolm Clements.

Two for the price of one. A chance to see the famous National Park when visited by two of our most talented photographers

January 13: Bamber Trophy Slide Competition. Judge: Barry Hatton.

Maximum three sets, each of 5 slides, less than two years old. Any subject, slides numbered in your projection sequence.

January 20: ‘Changes of direction’. Reg Jones.

Reg used to be a Police photographer; his talk will tell us where this has led him.

January 27: ‘A Journey Through Swavesey’. John Shepperson.

John’s talks on local history are famous. He will show us some of his vast collection of old photographs of the village.

February 3: Slide Road Show. Bill Law.

Bring along your slides for discussion and helpful advice from other members.

February 10: Set Subject Competition. ‘Windows’. Judge: Daphne Hanson.

Prints (no en-prints) and slides. Maximum three images. No age limit. None entered in this competition before.

February 17: EAF Portfolio.

Last year’s EAF Portfolio on slides with a tape commentary.

February 24: ‘The Restless River’ and ‘Among the Heather and Over the Brae’. David Garner.

Two-part talk on landscapes and wildlife.

March 3: Road Show Home. Bill Law.

Bring along your own prints for informal discussion, assessment and advice from other members, once again supervised by Bill.

March 8 (NB. Tuesday): Three-way Competition.

St Ives Free Church Hall. Come along and support your club as we compete against St Ives and Gamlingay.

March 10: Monochrome Portfolio.Judge: Gerry Metcalfe

Five print panes, all less than two years old, two of which must not have already been entered in an internal competition except Set Subject. Pictures should demonstrate a wide variety of technique. Two panels may be entered

March 17: ‘Colour Portraits’. Martin Figura.

In the short time since Martin last visited us he has had many exhibitions including one on Papworth hospital. Tonight we will see another facet of his work.

March 24: Practical Evening.

Another opportunity to ask our more experienced members for helpful advice.

March 31: ‘Humour and Pathos’. David and Judy Hodgson with Mike and Di Burns.

The Hodgsons and the Burns will bring along all their equipment to give us an Audio-visual show.

April 7: Colour Print Competition. Judge: Liz Hatton.

Maximum of four entries. Less than two years old. No en-prints.

April 14: ‘Best of Ted Rowe’. Ted Rowe.

From 17 years of success in competitions, national and international, Ted will show us some of his favourites.

April 21: ‘An Evening with Andy Who?’ Andy Hanson.

There’s no doubt who this is; Andy has visited us many times with his excellent work.

April 28: ‘Wet and Wild’. Dave Stewart.

May 5: Set Subject Competition. ‘Extremes’. Judge: Ray Kimberley.

Prints (no en-prints) and slides. Maximum three images. No age limit. None entered in this competition before.

May 12: ‘Fast and Wide – 2’ John Brackenbury.

John’s stunning work impressed everyone on his last visit. He is returning to show us his latest work using his unique specially designed macro-lens.

May 19: AGM.
