Internal Competitions

Typically, a competition is held about once a month. See the Programme for the competition dates for the current season.

This page contains a brief summary of the rules for each competition. However, please refer to the Handbook for details where information is more comprehensive and takes precedence.

For the 2008-9 season, digital projected images replace 35mm slides. See digital_images_internal_competitions_issue_1_sept_2008.pdf for specific requirements for entries.

Projector Profile

Competition Officer

Malcolm is in charge of running internal competitions for the 2008-9 season.

  • Images must be less than two years old
  • Images may be used a maximum of twice (note: this does not include any use in 'Set Subject' or other non-constitutional competitions, which are treated separately) and only once in any given competition.

For the Annual Digital Projected Image, , Monochrome Trophy and Colour Print competitions:

  • No more than two of the entries may have been entered previously in any of the constitutionally mandated competitions (i.e. those competitions listed in this section).

Other competitions

Set Subject Competitions

Up to three set subject competions are held annually. Each competition has a digital images and a prints section which are judged seperately. Prints should be mounted.

An image may only ever be used in one Set Subject competition; it may however also be used twice in constitutionally mandated competitions.

The subjects for the 2008-9 season will be:

  • Macro
  • One of the 7 Deadly Sins
  • Three of a kind

Again in 2008-9, as one of the 3 customary set subject competitions, we will be holding a '3 of a kind' competition. Entries will consist of 3 seperate images on the same subject, with a single title for the whole set. It is anticipated that 2 entries per member will be permitted; however this is subject to review depending on the total number of entries.

Photographer of the Year

Not a judged competition as such; the 'Photographer of the Year' is awarded based on the total points gained for performance in the constitutionally mandated competitions and the set subject competitions over the year. Points are given for placings in these competitions thus:

Placing Points
1st 5
2nd 4
3rd 3
Highly Commended 2
Commended 1

Image of the Year

The entries achieving first, second or third place in the constitutionally mandated competitions (both classes) and the set subject competitions (both digital images and prints) will go forward to the 'Image of the Year' competition, held at the end of the season.

For the Bamber Trophy and the Monochrome Portfolio competitions, the entrant shall choose one image from the scoring set.
